Dear Harrow in Europe, | ||||||||||
I am writing to let you know how our France trip went on the 12th16th June. It went exceptionally well! It did take us a good few hours to get there but the place was really good! Throughout the week we visisted a variey of places such as:
To visit these places was a real experience and everyone learnt alot more french. The trip was enjoyed by erveryone who went, including the teachers! Yours sincerely, Yasmin Dear Harrow in Europe, Thank you very much for your donation on behalf of Welldon Park Middle School and the year 7s who were luck enough to go to France. We really enjoyed our trip to France as we saw and learnt a variety of new things such as: the bell tower in Douai has 62 bells inside it, they range from very big to very small. We learnt how they make croissants and were shocked by the amount of butter that went into the dough. We also went to a beach which was one of the best any of us had been to. We went on a number of education trips as well including Ecole Denis Papin we discovered what a French school was like. Very big but with less pupils than us. The World War 2 and Joan of Arc Museums which were very interesting in different ways; World War 2 because they gave us a quiz which made us more competitive to learn more than the others. The Joan of Arc as we;; because it had audios in English which helped us to understand the models better. I would like to thank you again because without your donations some of us would not have been able to have that amazing experience. Y. M.

On Wednesday 28th March a group of children from a school in Douai visited Whitefriars School. The French children were greeted by Year 7 and their form teachers. Although there was a difference in their ages the Year 7s looked after the younger French children very well. Here are a few comments from the children:

For the last three months we have been writing letter to 2 schools in France. On Wendesday 29th March, we has a visit from 20 children from the Paule Parent School in Douai. All the year 7 went to the small hall and we all spoke to the French students. We all went around to different classes and looked around. We had a quiz when we came back, it was really fun. At 3pm we had some cakes and swapped addresses and email addresses to write to each other.

I really liked the French day (when the French came to our school) because even though they sometimes couldn't understand us, we got to communicate any way we could. I got an address of a really nice girl, called Justine, she was originally Serena's correspondent but I got to know her letter by using the French language that I learned from Ms Boodhna. The only bad part (bit I didn't like) was that half the time we couldn't understand each other. But I liked all the other partsespecially the food! by Kelisha
I really enjoyed the fact that the French actually came over to our school. I mean you don't get children from other countries, that don't speak English come over to England every day do you?
by Sawan At first nobody was talking but when we started to talk more. It was fun talking to people we have never seen before in ampther language. I thought it was be embarrassing and we would be sht. I found a correspondent her name was Justine Melle. Hopefully we will keep in contact in the future. The food was also nice too. We didn't get to do the English or french bingo. by Jeaunee | ![]()
I made friends with a girl named Felicia she was kind and she likes the same kind of music as me 'rock' she had even heard of Greenday and liked them. Nearing the end of the day we exchanged addresses and we are going to write to each other. I really like France and I have been there 4 times but to actually say to them: 'Bonjour je m'appelle Sophie comon t'epel to' ws so fun! by Sophie
| ![]() On the 21st October, Friday, we met in front of our school front gate at 4:45am. About 10-15 minutes later our coach arrived, we loaded our bags and left school. We arrived at the ferry at Dover at 7:45am. We took P&O ferry from Dover to Calais where we arrived promptly at 10:00am in French time. At 12:00 noon we went to "In Flanders Fields" in Ypres, a town in Northern Belgium. We got off and shopped in Belgium where we bought chocolates and sweets. As we got near to the town of Ypres, our tour guide for two hours told us to look for the military cemeteries that mark our route while he explains what happened there during the Great War between Germany and some other countries. We then went to Ypres Salient as he told us about the battles there, then we visited Hill 62 and Sanctuary Wood where we were shown may names of both dead and missing soldiers and we took some pictures. We went to many cemeteries after that and took pictures again. We left Ypres promptly at 5:30pm, we went to our hotel in Lens near Douai and Arass, Hotel Lensotel. When we reached there we were put in pairs and threes and were given keys to our rooms. We had two separate single bets. The rooms were very neat and comfortable. We had everything we needed. After we unpacked our things, we went straight to dinner where we ate carrot soup for a start, then ate then had a cheese cake for dessert.by S.D.
| First we had breakfast in Lensotel when we were told we were the best group for the first night by our teachers. The breakfast was lovely. I had some bread and hot chocolate. It was really nice. We were the drove to Albert to meet our guide tour. We had a 2 hour guided tour on the coach about the Somme battlefields area. We then had packed lunch on the coach and then visited the Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge to see the Memorial and visit the Historical Interpretative Centre. We all had great fun and it was a great experience to see all the trenches and actually walk around in them! I couldn't believe people actually were living there and we were walking there. Next we had a guided tour on "Memory and Battlefields" at Vimy Ridge. We then visited Douai and had photos taken. Then we were allowed to ship for about 1 hour and a half. It was really fun and the shops were cool! |
We had breakfast in our new hotel Hotel Ibis and then drove to central Paris. It was a long drive but was worth it!. We spent the day in Paris where we visited Montmartre, Cathedral of Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame, Ile de la Cite and the Eiffel Tower. The best bit was going all the way to the top of the Eiffel Tower. It took a long time to reach the top but once I got there the views were amazing! I took many pictures!!! We went back to the hotel to have our dinner and then we went bowling. It was really fun.
First we started our last day with having breakfast and then checking out of our hotel. We then went to a chocolaterie, near Le Touquet, en route to Calais. It was tasty chocolate and it was amazing to see how it was made!!! Lastly we went to the large shopping centre near Calais called Cite Europe. We checked in for our ferry but this time it took longer for us to get on as the sea was rough. We arrived home at 2:00am. I had a brilliant trip and everyone else agrees it was fun too! by L.H.
